A newborn baby can easily go through over 10 diapers in a single day. If you choose to go with disposable diapers then the cost can soon mount up. Cloth diapers on the other hand are re-usable, but that doesn’t mean to say that there aren’t ‘running costs’ associated with using them.
Obviously the cost of washing diapers is going to be your biggest on-going running cost, but you can offset this against the fact that if you are wasing diapers every day then you are inevitably going to need fewer diapers overall, as you only need to buy enough diapers to get you through to the next days wash. And if you plan to breastfeed then you’ll find that you don’t even need to rinse the diaper before washing!
When you are deciding on which to choose, disposable or cloth, it might be worth reflecting on the statistic we mentioned earlier – your baby is probably going to have a minimum of 10 diaper changes a day. Now work that out over just the first year of your baby’s life. Thats a minimum of 3650 diaper changes in your babys first year alone! Now I’m sure you don’t have to be a mathematician to work out the cost saving benefits of having re-usable diapers compared to disposable can be substantial. Then again, you also need to factor in the time it is going to take to wash the diapers and the convenience that a disposable diaper offers.
At the end of the day only you can choose, based on lifestyle, environmental beliefs, money, and convenience as to which is right for you, disposable diapers or re-usable cloth diapers.
